Peterborough Highway Services has a dedicated team of designers that works on schemes ranging from estate roads, cycle ways and bypasses that meet national and local highway authority standards. This also includes street lighting schemes.
They use the latest technologies to assist with the design process like smart boards. These communicate direct with other offices and helps to reduce the need to travel to meetings, saving time and improving productivity.
A safer and more sustainable way to travel
The team designed and created almost 500 metres of off-road cycleway and two new crossing points. To reduce the cost of the works, where possible, existing infrastructure was used. For example, existing traffic islands were redesigned as crossing points and the old unused A15 carriageway was cleaned and reused which doubled the size of the route for cyclists and pedestrians.
The main purpose of this cycleway scheme was to join Peterborough with Yaxley, a village four miles south of the city and close to the developing township of Hampton.
Cyclists now ride on a seamless and safe off-road cycleway which has access to key work and leisure locations. It also encourages a more sustainable and safer way of travelling through one of Peterborough’s major business parks.
